X : Xenomorph “They mostly come at night. Mostly.”

DAY 28

Xenomorph

I’m a pretty big Alien fan.
I used to be quite scared of Xenomorphs when I was younger.
Between the Great Movie Ride and this life-size statute I encountered once in a restaurant.
When I went through my Horror movie phase as a teenager, I  was a bit fearful to watch but I was more intrigued than scared, so I jumped in.

And Boy am I glad I did.
I quickly became obsessed with Ripley and her Alien journey.

There are many theories that have yet to be confirmed as to the existence of Xenomorphs. According to IMdb, director, Ridley Scott claims, “We’re getting closer and closer to the creation of the beasts – how and why they were created – and the first ‘Alien’ film that I made over thirty years ago.”

Alien has a run time of 1 hour and 57 minutes, the Xenomorph does not appear until an hour into the film and out of the last 57 minutes, it only has four minutes of screen time.

The Xenomorph in Alien is different from the ones that appear in the rest of the franchise. In Aliens, the Xenomorphs seem to only kill while hunting for food, in self-defense or gathering hosts for facehuggers. The Xenomorph in the Alien seems to kill for sport. It seems to be much more sadistic in nature and enjoys killing.

At the film’s premiere religious zealots set fire to the model of the Xenomorph believing it to be the work of the devil.

Alien 3 is the first film in which a Xenomorph can be seen eating its victim.

They Came From Outerspace

I’m a pretty big fan of Horror films.
Slashers, Paranormal, Psychological, you name it, I’ve taken a peek.
Now, not a lot frightens me…
aside from being alone in the dark with my own imagination.

…and Aliens that is.

For some reason anything that has to do with Aliens really freak me out…

When I was little I used to be really scared of the Alien section in The Great Movie Ride in Walt Disney World. And a restaurant near my house thought it would be a fantastic idea to have a life-size model of a Xenomorph in between one of the tables…But once I watched the films, I quickly got over my fears.

Xenomorphs don’t really scare me. I mean they’re horrifying creatures, but they’ve never kept me up at night. Aliens with eyes, specifically big eyes, now they freak me out. I don’t know why, because big eyes in animals always warms my heart. But Big Eyes in aliens? …No Way. I’m guessing it has something to do with being in touch with their emotions.

I won’t go into detail with other aliens with big eyes, I’m just going to focus on one.

Mars Attacks!

I was at my Grandparent’s house with my Mom, Aunts and cousin. I don’t know how or why but at some point that movie was put on and I was forced to watch it. When I say forced, they didn’t literally tie me to a chair ala Clockwork Orange, but I remember having to watch the entire film.

I was wary from the start but once the dog was killed I was out. I burst into tears and left the room, only to be coaxed back in for more horrors. Why we didn’t just change the channel is beyond me. It took me years to finally rewatch that movie and to fully put it behind me.

It’s one of the rare early Tim Burton films that I dislike. He used to be my favorite director growing up, thanks to Batman Returns, Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. Burton was a huge fan of those 1950s Sci-fi  films and B movies and wanted to pay a homage to the genre.

The look and style of the Aliens were inspired by the Mars Attacks trading card collection. The decision to have an A-List cast was motivated by the disaster films of the 1970s, such as The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno.

It’s a shame the aliens are in it, because it’s a pretty entertaining movie considering all the actors and humor.

Oh well, make sure you head over to Instagram.

8 Legs 1000 Eggs

I started watching hardcore horror films when I was in High School…and when I say hardcore let me clarify that I was watching more classic horror.
Poltergeist, The Exorcist and Alien.

Alien really opened my eyes to a whole different world.
I immediately got my hands on the other three films,
Aliens, Alien³ and Alien: Resurrection.

Sigourney Weaver instantly became my hero.
Every detail of this world amazed me.
I appreciate the fourth one, the third ticked me off a little
but the first two are just out of this world.

The creepiest creature in the whole Alien Quadrilogy are those kin to arachnids, space horseshoe crab like brutes, the Facehugger.

Facehuggers are the second stage of a Xenomorph’s life cycle.
Having been hatched from a Ovomorph (egg) which the Queen has laid,
and from there it grows into a Chestburster to Xenomorph.

The Facehugger was conceived by  writers, Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett came up with ideas for the Facehugger when trying to find a plausible way for the Alien to get aboard the ship. Shusett thought of the idea of having one of the crew impregnated with the alien and the idea grew from there.
It all boiled down to “male rape” and “impregnation”.

There were three reasons why they chose Kane’s character to be attacked.

  1. They felt that it would have been a horror movie cliché to have a woman be the weakened victim aka damsel in distress.

  2. It would have been inappropriate for a woman to be the victim of such a symbolic rape.
  3. They liked the idea of reversing the gender roles and felt that it would make male viewers more uncomfortable.

In the original script the Facehugger was going to immediately decompose after it died, resulting in them turning into acid and thus eating away more of the ship. Which would have made them more dangerous dead than alive.

SPOILERS AHEAD
FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T WATCHED
THE FULL SERIES

In Alien³ Ripley is impregnated with a Queen embryo.
The Facehugger is a special one known as a Royal Facehugger or Super Facehugger. It’s said that this special Facehugger can impregnate twice. One would be the Queen while the other would be a normal Xenomorph which would act as a guard.

A Royal Facehugger was created for the film but was cut from the theatrical release. But you can find it in the extended Assembly Cut.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going back to the amc Alien marathon.
