B : Bellatrix Lestrange “I hated the lot of them. My parents, with their pure-blood mania… my repulsive cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange…”

Day 02

Bellatrix Lestrange

A name I wish I could bestow upon a daughter without…you know, ramifications.

Aside from Hermione, Bellatrix Lestrange is my personal favorite Harry Potter character that I just Love to Hate. She’s just so deliciously evil and unhinged.
I just wish we saw more of her throughout the series.

Born Bellatrix Black in 1951, Lestrange was the eldest sister of Andromeda Tonks and Narcissa Malfoy and Aunt of Nymphadora Tonks and Draco Malfoy. She became Lestrange after marrying Rodolphus Lestrange, though she only married out of tradition. She was more infatuated with Lord Voldemort who was incapable of love.

Bellatrix was determined to kill any traitorous member of her family, she succeeded in killing her cousin, Sirius as we know. Though little known fact, she also succeeded in killing her niece, Tonks, during the Battle of Hogwarts. (This fact was later revealed by J.K. Rowling.)

I’m going to take a leap here and say just about everyone would agree that Helena Bonham Carter was the perfect Bellatrix.
Well, she was not the original choice. The actress who ended up playing her sister, Narcissa had the part. But in a moment of fortuitous, the actress became pregnant and had to drop out of filming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Funny enough, Carter later became pregnant during Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I the scene where Bellatrix carves the word mudblood into Hermione’s arm was thought up by Helena Bonham Carter and Emma Watson during filming. The scenes shot proved to be so intense that they were cut down during editing in order to avoid an R rating.

I’ll leave you with this Fun Fact:
Many characters were named after Star Constellations including Cassiopeia, Andromeda, Merope, Pollux, Orion, Regulus, Arcturus, Alphard, Cygnus and of course, Sirius, Scorpius, Draco and Bellatrix.

Bellatrix is part of the Orion constellation, it’s the star that marks the left shoulder. It’s one of Orion’s seven brightest stars and twenty-seventh brightest star in the night sky in fact. Bellatrix is also known as the Amazon Star.

Bellatrix is Latin for “female warrior.”
