T : Thackery Binx “Thackery Binx, thou mangy feline; still alive?”

Since it’s Saturday, I’ll keep it short and lite. I know this one may seem a bit odd, but you read that right,
Thackery Binx
During the Summer of 1993, Hocus Pocus was released. This Halloween classic would not have existed without Binx, the black cat. According to the TV documentary Hocus Pocus: Begin the Magic, Producer David Kirschner and his daughter came up with the original short story one night when a black cat crossed their paths. What if that cat was once a boy who was cursed by three witches over three hundred years ago? The story was originally meant to be a Disney Channel Original Movie, but once Walt Disney Studios saw it, they knew there was more potential.
b1jigdccuaaieb_Sean Murray best known for his role in the series NCIS, was cast as Thackery Binx. But in flesh only. His voice is not his own. Jason Marsden, an actor and well known voice actor, lent his voice for the role. He dubbed over Murray’s voice to keep the role consistent. One of Marsden’s best known roles is another Disney favorite, Goofy’s son, Max Goof, as well as Kovu. (Simba’s daughter, in The Lion King II Simba’s Pride.)
lg_hocus-pocus-thackery-binx-cat_1434035533-5842Real cats were filmed during the production, nine to be precise. Each trained from sleeping to swatting. Unfortunately, none of the cats were trained for speaking. That’s where the visual effects and animation company, Rhythm and Hues, steps in. They created the CGI Thackery Binx, they went to great lengths to insure Binx looked and acted authentic. When the studios saw what they were creating, they felt Binx was too realistic, especially in the teeth. The studios wanted the fangs toned down, feeling that the black cat would be too scary.

I for one have been a life-long fan, which hopefully you can agree with. I’ve gone as far as to name my beloved black cat after Thackery. In 2015, the sisters joined Disney’s annual Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party with their own special brew, Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular . Binx makes his park debut at the start of the show, by reciting, “Good evening, friends. Tonight on All Hallow’s Eve, your world and the magical world collide for but one night: A night filled with a new trick, a little treat, and a bit of… ‘hocus pocus.'”

  1. This movie was a staple in our household since its beginning. Amuck, amuck, amuck has been me and my sister’s Disney trip mantra since our first solo trip together and we can’t wait to see the new villains show this year! I just hate that my Disneyland trip last year caused me to miss it then!
